5 Facts of Tina Stewart on the Slain MTSU Basketball5 Facts of Tina Stewart on the Slain MTSU Basketball, The Middle Tennessee State University community is mourning the loss of women's basketball player Tina Stewart, who was fatally stabbed Wednesday at an off-campus apartment building.

Authorities have charged Stewart's roommate, 18-year-old Shanterrica Madden, with first-degree murder in the case.

"This is an unspeakable tragedy to one of our family members," said MTSU's athletic director, Chris Massaro. "Our biggest concern is with Tina and her family. The team is devastated, but we'll work through this together ... one step at a time."

1. She was originally from Memphis
Clantina Marie Lapae Stewart was born on Oct. 17, 1989.

2. She was a standout high school player
Stewart averaged 18 points, 4.5 rebounds, two steals and 1.8 assists per game during her senior season. She was also named to the Memphis Commercial Appeal's "Best of Preps" as a junior and senior.

3. She was known for her smile
"She was a great kid, she was a fighter and she was a competitor," Massaro said. "When I think of her right now, I think of her smile and grin. She would light up a room. It's hard to describe, it's hard for me to find words. I wish you all could have got to know her."

4. She was a consistent contributor for the Blue Raiders
Stewart was averaging 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 28 games this season for MTSU, the top seed from the East in the Sun Belt Conference tournament, which begins Saturday in Hot Springs, Ark.

5. A candlelight vigil was held in her honor
